Name | Information |
Born:
Sept. 15, 1843 |
His death record gives Sept. 15, 1843 as his birthdate. His family lived in Zachasberg, Prussia, before coming to America. Go to the the record page in his daughter Clara Tagatz Weckwerth's Bible that confirms his birthdate. |
Parents:
Martin Tagatz and Justina Messall |
Michael's death record said that his parents were Martin Tagatz and Justina Tagatz (see death entry below). Other records show that Justina's last name was Messall (see Justina's web page).
A September 20, 1843 baptismal record says Johann Michael Tagatz was the son of Martin Tagatz and Justine Missal. Witnesses were Gottfried Kelm, Christoph Drews and Wilhelmine Drews. The towns named in this record were Radke and Wittkowitz. [SOURCE: LDS Microfilm # 1194738 - Evangelische Kirche Morgonin record (Kreis Kolmar)] See a copy of this baptismal record. |
Marriage 1:
Married Ottilie Emilie Siewert on Nov. 18, 1866 |
A marriage listed in Marquette County Pre-1907 marriages online said that Emilie Siervert married Johann Michael Tagartz [both surnames misspelled].
After she died, Michael married Emilie's sister, Caroline. See the marriage record entries for both marriages in Clara Tagatz Weckwerth's family Bible. This record says this marriage occurred on Nov. 18, 1866. |
Marriage 2:
Married Caroline Albertine Siewert [aka Sievert] on Nov. 3, 1872 |
Michael Tagatz is listed on a Marquette County marriage index on Nov. 3, 1872. This matches a note left by Evaline Tagatz that mentioned Michael Tagatz and Caroline Albertine Sievert - Nov. 3, 1872. I don't know where she got this information. The month and year are confirmed in a marriage record given in Clara Tagatz Weckwerth's family Bible; however, this record says the marriage was on Nov. 10 and not the 3rd.
See the entry in their daughter Clara Tagatz Weckwerth's Bible says that August Siewert was the son of August Siewert, son of Christoph Siewert and Caroline Feneller Siewert. (August was born Aug. 17, 1853, and is likely the brother to both wives of J. Michael Tagatz). Another entry says that "Grandma Tagatz" died May 24, 1938 at the age of 81 years and 4 months. This would be Caroline Albertine Siewert Tagatz. J. Michael Tagatz's will names his wife Caroline Siewert as one of his heirs (see death detail entry below). |
Child 1 [Mother was Ottilie Emilie Siewert]:
Martin John Tagatz b. Aug. 20, 1867 d. Jan. 9, 1943 |
See the birth record entry for Martin Johann Tagatz in Clara Tagatz Weckwerth's family Bible, which confirms his birthdate as Aug. 20, 1867. Clara was his half-sister.
Family notes say that Martin married Wilhelmina "Minnie" Schewe on Apr. 9, 1890 (her parents were August Schewe and Pauline Krueger; Wilhelmina was born Feb. 14, 1870 in Marquette Co., WI, and died Feb. 19, 1962 at Blue Earth, Minn.). They had at least five children. To see a photo of Wilhelmina and her sons Albert, Edwin, Alpha, Gilbert and Lawrence, go to T42. Martin is shown on the 1880 Federal Census as living with his father, Michael Tagatz and his stepmother, Caroline Tagatz, in Crystal Lake, Marquette Co., WI. The 1900 Federal Census in Shields, Marquette Co., WI, shows:
A Minnesota Death Index entry on ancestry.com says Martin J. Tagatz died Jan. 9, 1943 in Faribault. According to a World War Draft Registration Card dated Aug. 24, 1918, their son Gilbert Henry Tagatz was born July 12, 1897 in Princeton, Wisconsin. This card said his father was born in Princeton, Wisconsin; his employer was Martin Tagatz (in Delavan, Minn.); and his nearest relative was Minnie Tagatz (residence Delavan, Minn.). Gilbert's height and weight were "medium;" his eyes were gray; his hair was light colored. Their son Alpha Alex Tagatz also had a World War I Registration Card (dated June 5, 1917 in Garfield, Oklahoma). His residence was R. R. # 4 Enid, Okla. He was born Oct. 25, 1894 in Germania, Wis. Occupation - farmer. Single; Caucasian. Height - short; weight - medium; eye color - blue; hair color - dark brown. Employed by Martin Tagatz (in Enid). The record said he had heart trouble. |
Child 2 [Mother was Ottilie Emilie Siewert]:
Friedrich "Fred" Wilhelm Tagatz b. Nov. 21, 1868; d. Jan. 9, 1952 |
For more information, see Fred's web page. He was born in Crystal Lake, Marquette Co., WI. |
Child 3 [Mother was
Ottilie Emilie Siewert]:
Wilhelmina Pauline Tagatz aka Minnie b. July 6, 1870; d. Apr. 1, 1952 |
Family notes from my grandmother (Evaline Tagatz Phillips) say that Minnie was born July 6, 1870 in Crystal Lake, Marquette Co., WI, and died Apr. 1, 1952. See the record confirming this birthdate in Clara Tagatz Weckwerth's family Bible. Clara was his half-sister.
She married Herman F. Boeker on Aug. 14, 1892 in Crystal Lake [Vol. 3, p. 24]. Herman's headstone in Germania Lutheran Cemetery says: Herman Boeker, 1857-1933 Father. Wilhelmina's headstone in the same cemetery says: Minnie Boeker, 1870-1953 Mother. Her obituary said she was "well known for her nursing ability and for her love of sewing and fancy work" and was the daughter of "Michael and Emelia Siefert Tagatz". They had at least five children. Family notes also say that Herman was born Apr. 30, 1857 in Prussia and died May 23, 1933 at age 76 years and 23 days. Three of Minnie's grandchildren died on the USS Oklahoma ship in Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. These brothers (Malcolm Herman Barber, LeRoy Kenneth Barber and Randolph Harold Barber - sons of Gertrude Irene Boeker and Peter T. Barber) had a destroyer named after them - the "Barber." Their mother, Gertrude, christened the new ship on May 20, 1943. A surviving son, Clayton, joined the Navy and served on the USS Barber. The three brothers who died together had asked to serve together. Their father was worried and wrote the Navy asking that they be split up. They died before the Navy had a chance to respond to this letter. Gertrude Boeker is listed in my Grandmother Evaline Tagatz's date book. Her birthdate is given as Feb. 3, 1898. Otto Boeker's birthdate was given as May 13, 1896 [click here to see a photo of Otto]. Harold Boeker was born June 5, 1900, and Minnie Boeker was born July 6, 1870. Clayton Barber was born Nov. 20, 1925. Herman Boeker and Minnie Tagatz were married Aug. 14, 1892. Earl Dagner and Adelia Boeker married Aug. 24, 1925. I assume these dates were given to my grandmother by word of mouth. This family shows up on the 1930 Federal Census in Farmington, Washington Co., WI:
The 1900 Federal Census in Shields, Marquette Co., WI, shows:
The 1900 Federal Census in Shields, Marquette Co., WI, shows August Rheinke living next door to Herman and Minnie Boeker. I don't know what relationship they have, if any, to Herman's first wife Amalie:

Child 4 [Mother was Ottilie Emilie Siewert]:
Albert August Tagatz b. Aug. 23, 1872; d. conflicting info |
Albert's mother died from complications of his birth. He died young and is buried in the Matz-Tagatz Cemetery in Marquette Co., WI. Several transcriptions of his tombstone say he was the son of J.M. and E. Tagatz, born Aug. 23, 1872 and died Jan. 14, 1875. These dates are the same in independent transcriptions found online plus old handwritten notes left by my grandmother decades ago. However, it is noted that the stone was broken, so the death date may not be correct since it does not match an entry in a family Bible. See the records in Clara Tagatz Weckwerth's family Bible. The Bible says he was born Aug. 23, 1872 and died ___ 17, 1872 (I think it reads September, but I'm not sure). Clara was his half-sister who was born in 1887 (years after Michael's death, so she would have likely depended on oral history for Albert's dates). |
Child 5 [Mother was Caroline A. Siewert]:
Michael Robert Tagatz b. Oct. 1, 1873; d. Sept. 10, 1874 |
Michael's head stone in the Matz-Tagatz Cemetery, Marquette Co., WI, said he was the son of J.M. and C. Tagatz, born Oct. 1, 1873 and died Sept. 10, 1874. See the records in Clara Tagatz Weckwerth's family Bible, which confirm these dates. Clara was his sister. |
Child 6 [Mother was Caroline A. Siewert]:
Lydia Maria Tagatz b. Sept. 30, 1876; d. Mar. 1957 |
Unsubstantiated family notes passed down to me from my grandmother Evaline Tagatz Phillips say that Lydia was born Sept. 30, 1876 and died Mar. 1957. See the birth record in Clara Tagatz Weckwerth's family Bible, which conflicts with my grandmother's notes by one year. It says Lydia was born Sept. 30, 1875. Clara was Lydia's younger sister.
She was buried at Rosendale Cemetery. She married Edward Schrank on June 4, 1900 (Edward was born July 13, 1874 in Crystal Lake, Marquette Co., WI, son of Christopher Schrank and Louisa; he died Oct. 17, 1956 in Fond du Lac, WI and is also buried in Rosendale Cemetery). They had at least one son. The 1900 Federal Census in Crystal Lake, Marquette Co., WI, shows:

Child 7 [Mother was Caroline A. Siewert]:
Eduard Julius Tagatz aka Eduart b. Jan. 18, 1878; d. Mar. 31, 1879 |
His headstone in the Matz-Tagatz Cemetery, Marquette Co., WI, is weathered and hard to read. It gives his name as Eduart Julius Tagatz but the dates are hard to read. It gives his parents' names but it hard to read. See the records in Clara Tagatz Weckwerth's family Bible, which say Edward was born January 18, 1878 and died March 31, 1879. |
Child 8 [Mother was Caroline A. Siewert]:
Hulda Blondina Tagatz b. Dec. 31, 1879; d. Oct. 17, 1956 |
Family notes from my grandmother Evaline Tagatz Phillips say that Hulda was born Dec. 31, 1879 in Crystal Lake, Marquette Co., WI, and died Oct. 17, 1956. See the birth record in Clara Tagatz Weckwerth's family Bible, which confirms this birth date. Hulda is buried in the Matz-Tagatz Cemetery, Marquette Co., WI. She was a practical nurse and never married.
An Evangelical Lutheran baptismal record for Hulda Blondine Tagatz shows she was born Dec. 31, 1879 and was baptized Jan. 18, 1880 in Crystal Lake, Marquette Co., WI. Her parents were Michael Tagatz and Caroline Siewert. Sponsors were August Siewert and Juliane Matz. [SOURCE: David and Alice Marotz] An article in the Montello Tribune, Feb. 3, 1938, by Fran Sprain, said that Hulda Tagatz helped in the Germania Store in the 1920's when business was heavy. In 1910, 1920 and 1930, she was living with her brother Theodore and their mother in Crystal Lake, Marquette Co., WI (see Child 10: Theodore's entry below). She was living with her parents in 1880 and 1900 (see census entries below). A letter written by Evaline Tagatz to her sister Adaline, dated Oct. 18, 1956, said: "Just a line to let you know that Aunt Hulda died last night. Funeral services will be at the Wachholz Funeral Home at Princeton Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Mother and I visited with Uncle Theodore Tuesday evening. He spent last week at Fond du Lac. Aunt Hulda was at the hospital then, and they knew there "wasn't much they could do for her." |
Child 9 [Mother was Caroline A. Siewert]:
Richard Reinhold Tagatz b. Jan. 27, 1882; d. July 10, 1909 |
Edwin C.M. Tagatz wrote a two note about the mill accident that killed Richard: "Carl Schauer, August Tagatz, Rudolph Tagatz, Ernst Weckwerth and Richard Tagatz were at work in Carl Schauer's building in Budsin. All but Richard were running the engine. He was close
to the wheel. The speed of the engine was too great for the band on the wheel. The band broke, stones flew out and killed Richard. He was 27 years old, unmarried and had a sizable bank account. Surviving family members decided to put his savings into a large monument in his memory. It stands on his grave in the Matz-Tagatz cemetery."
Another note about his death was left by Evaline Tagatz: "Richard R. Tagatz, while grinding feed in his mill, was instantly killed when the mill stone burst, part of it striking him. He was 27 years old at the time of his death. He had resided with his parents on the farm. Funeral was held at the Crystal Lake Lutheran Church with Rev. Thiel officiating. He was held in the highest esteem by the community, shown by nearly 100 teams being in the procession, the largest attendance ever seen there." He appears on the 1900 Federal Census (see entry below), which confirms his birth month as Jan. 1882. His monument in the Matz-Tagatz Cemetery, Marquette Co., says he was born Jan. 27, 1882 and died July 10, 1909. This death date also appears in the Marquette Co. Death Index (Vol. 3a, p. 362). See the birth record in Clara Tagatz Weckwerth's family Bible, which confirms his birth date as Jan. 27, 1882. |
Child 10 [Mother was Caroline A. Siewert]:
Theodore Paul Tagatz aka "Teddy the younger" b. Nov. 4, 1883; d. Feb. 23, 1963 |
Family notes say that Theodore was born Nov. 4, 1883, lived on his parents' farm which became a Century Farm, retired in Germania, WI, and died
Feb. 23, 1963. He is buried in the Matz-Tagatz Cemetery, Marquette Co., WI. See the birth record in Clara Tagatz Weckwerth's family Bible, which confirms his birth date as Nov. 4, 1883.
Theodore is on the 1900 census with his parents (see census entry toward bottom of this page). The 1910 Federal Census in Crystal Lake, Marquette Co., WI, shows:
Theodore Paul Tagatz's World War I registration card signed Sept. 12, 1918 said that he was born November 4, 1883. He was a self-employed farmer. Eye color - brown; hair color - black. Mrs. Caroline Tagatz was listed as his mother and nearest relative. Her address was given as 3 Neshkoro, Marquette, Wisconsin (the same address he had given for himself). |
Child 11 [Mother was Caroline A. Siewert]:
Clara Johanna Tagatz b. Jan. 26, 1887; d. Sept. 29, 1964 |
Family notes say that Clara was born Jan. 26, 1887 in Crystal Lake, Marquette Co., WI, and died Sept. 29, 1964 at Portage Hospital. She and her husband are buried in the cemetery east of Montello, Marquette Co., WI. See the birth record in Clara Tagatz Weckwerth's family Bible, which confirms her own birthdate.
She married Ernst (or Ernest) Friedrich "Jim" Weckwerth on Apr. 10, 1910 (Ernst was b. Oct. 5, 1884 in Crystal Lake, d. Oct. 1959; he was the son of Gustav Weckwerth and Maria Wilhelmina Draeger. He ran the Germania store, was a butter-maker and rheumatic.) They had at least one daughter. See the marriage record in Clara Tagatz Weckwerth's family Bible which confirms the date and their parents' names. The 1930 Federal Census in Shields, Marquette Co., WI, shows:
Family of Clara's Husband Ernst Weckwerth -- See the records in Clara Tagatz Weckwerth's family Bible, which lists Ernst's parents and his siblings: The 1870 Federal Census in Crystal Lake, Marquette Co., WI, shows Clara's father-in-law Gustoph as a child:
A Montello Express article, Feb. 3, 1983, by Fran Sprain, talks about Ernest Weckwerth who owned the Germania Store. The store was originally owned and operated by the Germany Company group. The chain of ownership was then Matz/Warnke then William Schwanke and then Ernest Weckwerth who rented it before buying it. Just before Ernest took over the store, Ed Brietenfelt operated it. Weckwerth worked in Richard Fenske's sawmill, helped with King's threshing machine and helped make hay on Bethke's marsh. The Germania store was a social gathering place with people playing cards under the light from gasoline lamps on Saturday nights. A Social Security death index record on ancestry.com says Clara Weckwerth was born Jan. 26, 1887 and died Sept. 1964. Her Social Security number was issued in Wisconsin. |

Died:
Dec. 20, 1906 |
A death record in Marquette Co., WI, said that Michael Tagatz died Dec. 20, 1906 at age 63 years and 3 months. This record said he was a farmer from Germany; his parents
were Martin Tagatz and Justina Tagatz; his wife was Caroline Tagatz. He lived in Crystal Lake at the time of his death. He died or pheumatism and pneumonia (duration of diesease 4 months). This record says that he was never a soldier. The undertaker was Alfred Warnke. [Vol. 3, p. 174]
A will is on file in Marquette County, WI, for J. Michael Tagatz. The probate date was Feb. 5, 1907. He willed all his land to his wife who was named as Caroline Tagatz (nee Siewert) and son Theodore Tagatz. He also willed $200 to Hulda Tagatz, $500 to Richard T. Tagatz and $200 to Clara T. Tagatz. [Vol. 1, p. 234]. His tombstone in the Matz-Tagatz Cemetery in Marquette Co., WI, says that Michael Tagatz was born Sept. 15, 1843 and died Dec. 20, 1906. The stone is weathered, and it is difficult to read the last digit in the birth and death years. |
