Child 1:
Alma A. Klawitter b. Apr. 30, 1901; d. Mar. 14, 1995 |
Alma married Byron Cragin, and they had at least two children.
Alma A. Cragin's Social Security death index record shows
she was born Apr. 30, 1901 and died Mar. 14, 1995. Her last
residence was given as Montello, Marquette Co., WI. Alma and her husband were living with her parents in 1930 (see census details). Her father's obituary says that Mrs. Byron (Alma) Cragin was living in Packwaukee when he died in 1950.
For misc. Cragin surname records, go to the Cragin web page. Emil's second Petition for Naturalization confirms her date of birth and said Alma was born in Mecan Twp., Marquette Co., WI, and was living in Montello Twp., WI (June 23, 1923). Emil's first Petition (June 6, 1917) gives the same date of birth with an unclear residence entry. Marquette County's birth index has an entry for Alma Louise Klawitter, born Apr. 30, 1901 (Vol. 1D, p. 149). |
Child 2:
Ida Minna Therese Klawitter b. May 17, 1902 |
Emil's first Petition (June 6, 1917) and his 2nd Petition for Naturalization (June 23, 1923) said Ida was born May 17, 1902 in Mecan Twp., WI. Ida was living in Duluth, Minnesota, at the time he filled out these petitions.
Baptized June 8, 1902 in an Evangelical Lutheran Church, Marquette County. Baptismal sponsors were Minna Sieg, Therese Klawitter and Gustav Zarbrock (transcribed as Sarbrock). This baptismal record confirms her parents were Emil and Bertha and confirms her full name and her date and place of birth. [Source: Transcription of record online by David and Alice Marotz] Marquette County's birth index has an entry for Ida M. Klawitter, born May 17, 1902 (Vol. 1D, p. 292). Ida married three times. Her first husband was Joe Kranjievic who died at around age 25 [one family member told me his name was John Konstivich, which varies from the spelling and first name shown in Emil Klawitter's obituary.] This obit says Mrs. Joe (Ida) Kranjievic was living in Oliver when her father died in 1950. Ida's second husband, John Turk [see photo], also died young. Her third husband was Mr. Johnson who died in Minnesota. For photos of Ida, go to: KL6; KL17 The 1930 Federal Census in Packwaukee, Marquette Co., WI, shows Ida with her husband John Turk:

Child 3:
Elsa "Elsie" Elise (L.) Klawitter b. Nov. 3, 1904; d. July 1985 |
Emil's 2nd Petition for Naturalization said Eloia [as typed on the form] was born Nov. 3, 1904 in Mecan Twp., WI, and lived in Montello Twp., WI (on June 23, 1923). Note that her name is spelled "Elsie" on the 1920 Federal Census (see census details below) and on Emil's first Naturalization Petition (June 6, 1917).
Her baptismal record says that Elsa Elisa Klawitter was born on Nov. 3, 1904 and baptized on Nov. 20, 1904 in Mecan. Her sponsors were Herman Klawitter, Jr. and Minna Zarbrock (transcribed as Sarbrock). [Source: Record transcription online by David and Alice Marotz] Family oral history says that she married Archibald "Archie" McDougal and had at least four children; Elsa died in 1985. A Social Security death index record in ancestry.com says that Elsie McDougal was born Nov. 3, 1904 and died July 1985. It said her last residence was Montello, Marquette Co., WI. Archie McDougal was listed on the Social Security death index on ancestry.com; it said he was born on Jan. 16, 1901 and died May 1975 (last residence was Montello, Marquette Co., WI). Mrs. Archie (Elsie) McDougal was living in Buffalo when her father died in 1950 [Source: Emil Klawitter's obituary]. The Family of Archibald McDougal - Husband of Elsie: The 1860 Federal Census in Buffalo, Marquette Co., WI, likely shows Elsie's husband's great-grandfather Archibald and grandfather Charles [Charles is age 52 on the 1900 census and is shown as the father of George McDougal; George is Elsie's husband's father]:
Elsie E. McDougal is buried next to her husband Archie L. McDougal in the Oak Lawn Cemetery, Buffalo, Marquette Co., WI. Archie's stone said he lived from 1901-1975; Elsie's said she lived from 1904-1985. [SOURCE: Cemetery transcription by L.L Ketchum] |
Child 4:
Leona Claire Klawitter b. Nov. 1, 1906; d. Feb. 6, 1989 |
Emil's 2nd Petition for Naturalization said Laonie [as typed on the form] was born Nov. 1, 1906 in Mecan Twp., WI, and lived in Montello Twp., WI (on June 23, 1923). Her name was spelled the same way (Laonie) on his 1st Naturalization Petition (June 6, 1917).
Marquette County's index shows a birth record for Leona Clara Klawitter, born Nov. 1, 1906 (Vol. 1E, p. 189). A Social Security death index entry on ancestry.com confirms Leona C. Ingraham was born on Nov. 1, 1906 and died Feb. 6, 1989. It said her last residence was Packwaukee, Marquette Co., WI. Family oral history said that she married Willis Ingraham, had nine children and died in 1989. The Social Security death index on ancestry.com said Willis Ingraham was born Oct. 5, 1904 and died Sept. 9, 1995 (last residence was Packwaukee, Marquette Co., WI). Mrs. Willis (Leona) Ingraham was living in Oxford when her father died in 1950. [Source: Emil Klawitter's obituary] To see a photo of Leona, go to: KL17. Child 5:
Edwin Emil Klawitter b. Aug. 1908; d. Nov. 23, 1996 |
Edwin's middle name was Emil, according to his wife's obituary.
Emil's 1st Petition for Naturalization and his 2nd Naturalization Petition say Edwin's date of birth was Aug. 10, 1908 in Buffalo, WI, and he was living in Montello Twp., WI (on June 23, 1923 & June 6, 1917). A Social Security death index record in ancestry.com says Edwin E. Klawitter was born Aug. 10, 1908 and died on Nov. 23, 1996 (dates match his obituary). This record said his last residence was Montello, Marquette Co., WI. See Edwin's obituary for more details about his family. It says he worked on the railroad, farmed in the Town of Buffalo, enjoyed hunting, trapping and fishing. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Family oral history says he married Rose Emma Draeger (Rose was born Mar. 22, 1911, d. Apr. 17, 1988; her sister was Zelma Draeger who married Bernard Cragin, a nephew to Bertha Zarbrook). A Social Security death index record in ancestry.com says that Rose E. Klawitter was born Mar. 22, 1911 and died Apr. 17, 1988; her last residence was given as Montello, Marquette Co., WI. Edwin is buried in the Montello Cemetery with his wife. They had four children. Go to Rose's obituary for more information about her family. Among details included in this obit: Her parents were August Draeger and Emma (Prill) Draeger; Edwin and Rose were married on April 30, 1936. [Go to Photo Gallery Index for links to Rose's photos.] Edwin is on the 1920 and 1930 census forms with his parents (see census entries toward the bottom of this web page). His father's obituary says that Emil Klawitter lived with Edwin of Packwaukee for the past 14 years. Child 6:
Evalina "Lena" Klawitter aka Evelyn, Evaline b. June or July 7, 1910 |
Emil's 2nd Petition for Naturalization said Evaline was born July 7, 1910 in Buffalo Twp., WI, and lived in Montello Twp., WI (on June 23, 1923). Emil's 1st Naturalization Petition gives her birth date as June 7, 1910. Her name was spelled Evaline on both forms.
Family oral history says her first husband was Ewalt Berg (b. May 11, 1886; d. June 1966 -- dates confirmed in a Social Security death index record on ancestry.com; his last residence was given as Montello, Marquette Co., WI). Her second husband was Alvin Tagatz (b. Feb. 7, 1916; d. Sept. 1975, son of Albert Carl Tagatz and Ida Gates TAGATZ). They married on Nov. 20, 1970 in the Township of Mecan, Rural Montello, WI. [Source: Bill Tagatz] A Social Security death index record on ancestry.com confirms Alvin's date of birth and month/year of death as well as his last residence as Princeton, Green Lake Co., WI. Evelyn is on the 1920 census with her parents. Lena had four children. The father of her son Cecil Klawitter was Mr. Groskritz. A family member told me that Cecil died of a heart attack while driving for a construction company close to Madison, Wisconsin. The Social Security Death index shows a Cecil Klawitter was born June 18, 1927 and died in July 1977 (his last residence was Baraboo, Sauk County, Wisconsin) [SOURCE: ancestry.com]. To see photos of Lena, go to: KL1; KL7: KL8. The 1930 Federal Census in Montello, Marquette Co., WI, shows:

Child 7:
Herbert Herman Klawitter b. May 5, 1911; d. Jan. 27, 1992 |
Family sources say Herbert was born on May 5, 1911. However, Emil's 2nd Petition for Naturalization said Herbert was born May 5, 1912 in Buffalo Twp., WI, and lived in Montello Twp., WI (on June 23, 1923). His father's 1st Naturalization Petition shows Herbert was born May 5, 191__ [last digit hard to read].
His father's obituary says that Herbert was living in Montello when Emil died in 1950. A Social Security death index record on ancestry.com says Herbert H. Klawitter was born May 5, 1911 and died Jan. 27, 1992. His obituary confirms that he was the son of Emil and Bertha. It also matches the date and place of birth that appears on the Petition for Naturalization. He married Margaret Dorothy Barron on Nov. 26, 1932 in Packwaukee, Marquette Co., WI [see Margaret's photo]. He was a farmer and helped construct the Merrimac, WI, power plant. He also worked for the Montello Products Co. He died Jan. 27, 1992. [SOURCE: Obituary transcription posted on rootsweb.com by Deborah Slager] Herbert's death certificate says he was born May 5, 1912 and died Jan. 27, 1992 of pneumonia due to a cardio-vascular accident and cardial arterosclerosis (coronary artery disease). His parents were listed as Emil Klawitter and Bertha Zarbrook. It said he was a farmer with a surviving spouse (Margaret Dorothy Barron) who was the informant. Family oral history says they had five children and that Margaret Barron's parents were Ray Barron and Cora Leonard. Herbert was on the 1920 and 1930 census with his parents (see census entries below). To see photos of Herbert, go to: KL2; KL13; KL17. The 1930 Federal Census in Packwaukee, Marquette Co., WI, shows Herbert's future wife Margaret and her family:

Child 8:
Alice A. Klawitter b. Feb. 14, 1914; d. Oct. 9, 1996 |
Emil's 2nd Petition for Naturalization said Alice was born Feb. 14, 1914 in Buffalo Twp., WI, and lived in Montello Twp., WI (on June 23, 1923). Her father's 1st Naturalization Petition confirms this date of birth.
Family oral history says she married Walter Stibb, had five children and died in 1996. A Social Security death index record on ancestry.com says Alice A. Stibb was born on Feb. 14, 1914 and died Oct. 9, 1996. It gave her last residence as McFarland, Dane Co., WI. Her father's obituary says Mrs. Walter Stibb (Alice) was living in Dalton when her father died in 1950. Alice was on the 1920 and 1930 census with her parents (see census entries below). Child 10:
Edna Helen Klawitter b. May 15, 1919 or Mar. 1, 1918 d. Dec. 30, 2000 |
Emil's 2nd Petition for Naturalization said Edna was born May 15, 1919 in Buffalo Twp., WI, and lived in Montello Twp., WI (on June 23, 1923). This date of birth is confirmed in her father's 1st Naturalization Petition. Her obituary confirms that she is the daughter of Emil and Bertha. It says she was born on Mar. 14, 1918 in Buffalo, Marquette Co., WI. Her husband was John Carl Erdman; they got married on Nov. 20, 1938 in Packwaukee, Marquette Co., WI. John died on Dec. 8, 1997. [SOURCE: Obituary transcription posted on rootsweb.com by Debi Slager]
A Social Security Death Index record on ancestry.com says that Edna H. Erdman was born on Mar. 14, 1918 [which contradicts her father's Petitions for Naturalization] and died Dec. 30, 2000. It gave her last residence as Packwaukee, Marquette Co., WI. Her father's obituary says that Mrs. John Erdman (Edna) was living in Packwaukee when he died in 1950. A Social Security Death Index record on ancestry.com shows John C. Erdman - born July 6, 1915 and died Dec. 8, 1997 (last residence Packwaukee, Marquette, WI). Another record shows John W. Erdman (born May 13, 1913 and died Feb. 3, 1988 - last residence Montello, Marquette Co., WI). This second individual is not the John Erdman who married Edna based on her husband's middle name and date of death in Edna's obituary. Since these two men lived in the same general area and had the same name, though, census records without a middle initial are an unreliable source of information for this family without confirming information. To see misc. Erdman records, go to the Erdman web page. Edna was on the 1920 and 1930 census with her parents (see census entries below). See photos of Edna at: KL5: KL9; KL17. |
Immigration:
Came to USA on May 18, 1888 |
Emil's Petition for Naturalization dated June 23, 1923 said he came to American from the port of Bremen, Germany, to New York on May 18, 1888. His first petition was filed June 6, 1917, but was declined because "petition was filed on an old declaration." The 1923 petition does not name the ship he came on, but the first petition said he arrived on the "Kaiser Wilhelm" on or about June 1, 1888. Go to Emil's Petition & Oath to see images of his accepted petition and oath of allegiance or the denied petition. See Emil's Declaration of Intention Nov. 30, 1920.
This matches family oral history which says Emil came to America when he was 16 or 17 years old and then lived in Mecan, Marquette Co., WI, with another Klawitter family for awhile. Julius Klawitter in Princeton, WI, was his immigration sponsor. One of Emil's daughters said Julius was a brother of Ludwig Klawitter, and therefore Emil's uncle. She also said Emil left Germany to avoid being drafted into the military. Other family oral history states that Emil first immigrated around 1885. He worked for two years and brought his brother Albert to the United States. Emil and Albert then worked for a few more years and earned money to bring their brothers Ernest and Herman plus their parents. Since Ernest, Herman and their parents came to America in 1893, this oral history may well be true. |
Census Record:
1900 Federal Census Mecan, Marquette Co., WI |
The 1900 Federal Census in Mecan, Marquette Co., WI, shows:
NOTE: Other information says mother's month of birth is Feb. 1847 and father's birth is Sept. 1843; it's possible the census taker got the two months mixed up or that his date of birth given on his death record is in error. This census said that both her parents were born in Germany (her father was born in Wisconsin). NOTE: Bertha got counted twice in 1900; she also appears on a 1900 Census as living with her parents in Packwaukee, Marq. Co., WI -- this is the year Emil and Bertha got married, and she likely moved from her parents place to her in-laws house after the marriage; her age and month of birth match on both records. |

Occupation:
Farmer, blacksmith and forester |
Farming was Emil's primary occupation. A relative said he also worked on a crew that built the original roads in Marquette Co.
Family oral history says he planted trees in the Royal Forest and was a blacksmith apprentice in Germany. He knew how to weld steel together without flux. |
Misc. Note:
Played concertina |
One of Emil's daughters said that he played music from Prussia on his concertina (which is like a small accordian), and his children delighted in dancing to his music. |
Misc. Note:
Birthplace named in Treaty of Versailles |
Emil's birthplace [Battrow] was mentioned as being left in Germany when the 1919 Treaty of Versailles established a new boundary between Poland and Germany: "a line to be fixed on the ground leaving the following places to Poland: Jasdrowo, Gr. Lutau, Kl. Lutau, Wittkau, and to Germany: Gr. Butzig, Cziskowo, Battrow, Bock, Grunau"
Cziskowo is also mentioned in this treaty. Emil's father, Ludwig named Ziskowo as his residence on the passenger list when he came to America. Note that the 1930 Census above says he was born in Poland. The town of Battrow was in Prussia when he lived there. In 1919 it was part of Germany. After WWI, it became part of Poland. Many Germans in that area were driven out of the area or killed. He told one of his daughters that his hometown was burned to the ground after he had immigrated to America. |
Misc. Note:
Other Emil Klawitters in area |
Another Emil Klawitter who is not my ancestor appears on the 1900 Federal Census in Princeton, Green Lake Co., WI, shows:
An Emil Eduard Klawitter was born Jan. 27, 1870 in Prussia; christened Feb. 12, 1870; parents - Eduard Klawiter and Karoline Schmidt; residence - Neu Battrow; witnesses - Johann Klawiter, Anna Klawiter, Louise Klawiter [LDS Film #1496971 - Evangelischen Kirche zu Battrow (Batrorowo)] Battrow is the same town where my ancestor Emil Ludwig Klawitter lived as an infant. I wouldn't be surprised if these two Emils were cousins. |
Died:
Feb. 19, 1950 |
Family oral history says that Emil died Feb. 19, 1950 in his son Edwin's home of a cerebral hemorrhage. He is buried in Montello Cemetery.
A Marquette County, Wisconsin, death certificate said that Emil Ludwig Kliwitter [last name was misspelled in record] died at the age of 78 years on Feb. 19, 1950 in Packwaukee. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage and had bronchial pneumonia). It said he was a married, retired farmer. Informant was Edwin Kliwitter [last name misspelled again]. For more details about his family, see his obituary. It says he had the flu which resulted in complications leading to his death. |
