Wilhelmine "Minnie" Oct. 3, 1850 |
Wilhelmine's obituary said that she was born in Germany on Oct. 3, 1852, and came to America at the age of three with her parents.
Wilhelmine married Christoph Schuman on Dec. 30, 1874 in Shields, Marquette Co., WI. The marriage certificate says his parents were Michael Schumann and Louisa; his birthplace was Prussia. On Christof's death certificate, Christiana Bautler was listed as his mother. [SOURCE: Mary Ann Crain] It is common for the settlers from Germany to sometimes use their middle names as their first names; it's possible that these two records naming his mother are not contradictory -- but more research is needed to know. Wilhelmine's husband Christof Schumann came to America on the ship Henry from Bremen. The ship landed in New York on Sept. 27, 1872. Christof was 24, a farmer. [SOURCE: Mary Ann Crain] Christ. Schuman (of Montello, Wis.) was listed as the informant on Juliana Zarbuck's death certificate. Family oral history (stories passed down from Wilhelmine's sisters) say that Christof worked in a candy factory in Oshkosh. He was the youngest of three brothers and a sister. Wilhelmine's [Mrs. Chris Schumann] obituary said that she died on Apr. 28, 1921 at 6:48 pm in the home of her daughter, Mrs. L.W. Neale of Portage. It said she was born Oct. 3, 1852 in Germany. One descendant said that Wilhelmine had 13 children, most appear on census records. Children not listed above include: Anna Marie (b. Sept. 22, 1890) and Ida (born Dec. 31, 1893). Their daughter Pauline also went by the name Helen (born Aug. 23, 1886). A daughter by the name of Mayme (born Feb. 1884).
