Married Julie Modanzen (or Madden or Maddance or Madson)
Family notes say that Daniel was married to Julie or Julianna Madden or Madson. He shares a tombstone with Jule Modanzen.
Child 1:
Wilhelmine "Minnie"
Oct. 3, 1850
Her obituary said that she was born in Germany on Oct. 3, 1852, and came to America at the age of three with her parents.

She married Christoph Schuman on Dec. 30, 1874 in Shields, Marquette Co., WI. The marriage certificate says his parents were Michael Schumann and Louisa; his birthplace was Prussia. On Christof's death certificate, Christiana Bautler was listed as his mother. [SOURCE: Mary Ann Crain] It is common for the settlers from Germany to sometimes use their middle names as their first names; it's possible that these two records naming his mother are not contradictory -- but more research is needed to know.

Wilhelmine's husband Christof Schumann came to America on the ship Henry from Bremen. The ship landed in New York on Sept. 27, 1872. Christof was 24, a farmer. [SOURCE: Mary Ann Crain]

Family oral history (stories passed down from Wilhelmine's sisters) say that Christof worked in a candy factory in Oshkosh. He was the youngest of three brothers and a sister.

The 1880 Federal Census in Sheilds [as spelled on form - should be Shields], Marquette Co., WI, shows Minnie or Amenia (age 27, born in Prussia). She was living with:

  • son Herman (age 2 years six months, born in Wis.)
  • her mother Julia Sarbuk (age hard to read - could be 53, born in Prussia)

The 1900 Federal Census in Shields, Marquette Co., WI, shows Minnie living next door to her brother William's family. Minnie (age 49, born Oct. 1850 in Germany, immigrated in 1852, in America for 48 years, married 22 years, had 11 children with 11 living in 1900). She was living with:
  • her husband - Christopher Shuman (age 53, born May 1847 in Germany, immigration date given but illegible, in America for 30 years, farmer)

She was living with:
  • her husband Christofher or Christoffer [my best guess at deciphering his name from the record] (age 63, born in Germany, immigration date too faint to read, farmer)
  • son Herman (age 27, single, born in Wis., farm laborer)
  • her mother Julia Zarboc [as spelled; at least that's my best guess] (age 85, widow, had three children with three living in 1910, immigrated in 1857)

  • Gust Schuman (age 34, married 12 years, born in Wis., parents born in Germany, farmer)

  • son Edwin A. (age 2, born in Wis.)

  • son Edwin (age 21, single, born in Wis.)

  • wife Minnie (age 46, married at age 20, born in Germany, immigrated in 1884)
  • son John (age 11, born in Wis.)

One descendant said that Wilhelmine had 13 children, most appear on census records. Children not listed above include: Anna Marie (b. Sept. 22, 1890) and Ida (born Dec. 31, 1893). Their daughter Pauline also went by the name Helen (born Aug. 23, 1886). A daughter by the name of Mayme (born Feb. 1884). [SOURCE: Mary Ann Crain] Mayme might be Minnie who appears on the 1900 census.

The 1900 census says that Daniel's daughter immigrated in 1852. If Daniel brought her with him, this could be his immigration date also. He had a son born in Wis. in 1856, which makes that year the latest year for his arrival in America.
