Born:
May 21, 1792 |
This birthdate was on notes copied from a parchment roll and sent to Germania relatives by Lucy Jones, George Jones' wife. This parchment roll was prepared by George A. Cunningham for Major Ephraim Jones of Lunenberg, "who inheriting and residening upon the spot first settled by his great-grandfather, inherits the many excellent traits of character of a long line of honorable and pious ancestry." |
Parents:
William Jones and Susannah Pollard |
Family information compiled by George A. Cunningham in the 1800's say that Ephraim's parents were William Jones and Susannah Pollard.
Pollard Family Tree: Susannah Pollard was born in Howard March 1772. She was a daughter of David Pollard, supposedly a descendant of William and Anna Pollard of Boston. [SOURCE: George A. Cunningham's account of the Jones family; date sometime in the 1800's] I haven't been able to prove a chain of ancestors leading to Anna myself; Cunningham said that Susannah's great-grandfather David Pollard was the youngest son of William and Anna. Anna Pollard died in Boston Dec. 6, 1725 at the age of 105. Anna came from England with Governor Winthrop in 1630; she was 10 years old then and was the first white female to come to Boston. For misc. Pollard surname records, go to the Pollard web page. |
Marriage 1:
Married Jemmima Barrett |
Ephraim married Jemmima Barrett on Jan. 7, 1816 [ceremony performed by Rev. David Duncan]. [SOURCE: George A. Cunningham]
Jemmima Barrett's History: The following information came from George A. Cunningham's research decades ago: Jemmima was born in Townsend, Mass., in 1796. She was the sixth child and fifth daughter of Captain Benjamin and Hannah Barrett. Apparently she was the younger sister of Lucinda Barrett (Ephraim's third wife); Lucinda was born in New Hampshire, which means Jemmima's parents were in New Hampshire in 1801 [see details under "Marriage 3"].Jemmima died July 7, 1846 at the age 50. Even though Ephraim married three times, Jemmima was the mother of all of his children. Her sister Lucinda married Ephraim after Jemmima died. Angelina Jones' 1895 diary notes that the cemetery shows Jemima Barret [full name as spelled in her diary] died July 7, 1846 at the age of 50. |
Marriage 2:
Lucinda Barrett |
Ephraim's second wife was Lucinda Barrett, the widow of Walter Carlton. Lucinda and Ephraim were married on Apr. 8, 1847 by Rev. Samuel Heath. Lucinda was born in Mason, New Hampshire on Mar. 28, 1801. She was the sister of Ephraim's first wife Jemmima. Lucinda died Apr. 5, 1864 at the age of 63. [SOURCE: Information compiled by George A. Cunningham for the Jones family in the 1800's.]
Lucinda appears on the 1850 census with Ephraim (see census entry below). Lucinda Barrett's First Husband: Family tree information submitted by Brian Balkcom (Ancestry World Tree posted on www.ancestry.com) says Walter Carleton (b. June 6, 1798 in Townsend, Middlesex Co., MA; died in Townsend, Middlesex Co., MA; left Dublin, New Hampshire prior to Jan. 1, 1853; no known children). He supposedly married Lucinda Barrett on May 27, 1822 in Madison, Carroll, New Hampshire. Lucinda was supposedly born in that same city about 1801 [this town birth name differs from George Cunningham's document, although both mention New Hampshire]. Walter's parents were listed as Luther Carleton (b. Aug. 26, 1772 in Lunenburg, Worcester Co., MA) and Martha Robinson (b. about 1775 in Townsend, Middlesex, MA). The sources for these details were not cited. A Walter Carleton was a stage coach driver to Keene, New Hampshire. There were two stage routes from Keene to West Townsend (then splitting into two separate routes from there). I don't know if this is or isn't the same Walter who married Lucinda Barrett. Samuel Abbott Green, M.D. -- posted on the Project Gutenberg web site] |
Marriage 3:
Adeline Robinson |
Ephraim's third wife was Adeline Robinson, the widow of Luther M. Graves. They were married on Jan. 24, 1865 by Rev. Charles R. Harding. Adeline married her first husband, Luther, on Sept. 9, 1857; Luther died Nov. 1861 at the age of 51 years, one month and 19 days. Adeline was born in Lunenberg, Massachusetts, on Aug. 8, 1823. Her parents were Benjamin Robinson and Elizabeth Dodge. "She was a lady of superior education and much refinement." [SOURCE: Information compiled by George A. Cunningham for the Jones family sometime in the 1800's.]
Robinson Family: Adeline shows up on the 1850 Federal Census in Lunenburg, Worcester Co., WI [and again with Ephraim in 1870 and 1880 (see census entries toward the bottom of this page)]:
To see misc. records on the Robinson surname, go to the Robinson web page. "Mrs. Adeline Jones" shows up on the 1900 Federal Census in Lunenburg, Worcester Co., MA (age 76, born Aug. 1823 in Mass., parents born in Mass.). She was living with her daughter Fannie Graves (age 42, born Sept. 1857 in Mass.) and her son Nelson B. Graves (age 40, born May 18__ [last two digits hard to read]). Both Fannie's and Nelson's father were born in Vermont [which contradicts the 1880 census], and their mother was born in Mass. In 1910, Adaline E. Jones (age 86, widow, born in Mass., parents born in Mass.) was living with her daughter Fannie Graves [middle initial given but hard to read] (age 52, single, born in Mass., father born in Vermont, mother born in Mass., teacher), her son Nelson B. Graves (age 49, single, born in Mass., father born in Vermont, mother born in Mass.) and servant William Robbins (age 42, single, born in Mass., father born in New Hampshire, mother born in Ireland, farm hand). She was living next door to her brother George E. Jones. |

Angelina Ellis' 1895 diary shows a cemetery note saying that Lizzie was the wife of Geo E. Jones. It said that Lizzie died on May 16, 1874 at the age of 37. Go to Angelina Ellis' 1895 journal. This journal details her visit to the Jones homestead and relatives in Massachusetts. George appears on the 1850 census in Ashburnham, Worcester Co., MA with his sister Susannah Elisabeth Jones (see "Child 5" census information above). The 1910 Federal Census in Lunenburg, Worcester Co., Mass., shows:
If George were 79 in 1910, it would make his birthdate closer to 1831. |

Charles Gustavus Jones was born Apr. 2, 1834. He graduated from Dartmouth College "as a young man of much promise." He died in Upton on Sept. 19, 1859 at the age of 25 years, five months and 16 days. He never married. [SOURCE: Information compiled by George A. Cunningham for the Jones family in the 1800's.]
Charles appears on the 1850 census with his parents and siblings (see census details below). Angelina Ellis' 1895 diary confirms that Charles died Sept. 19, 1859 at the age of 25. It said that Angelina's husband Samuel had noted this when they visited the cemetery where Charles was buried. To read the text of this diary, go to Angelina's journal. Tavern in the Jones' Family |
Angelina Ellis wrote in her 1895 diary that: "Uncle invited us to ride up to the Jones farm. It had been sold a few years ago but had been the property of the Jones'es for more than one hundred years. One of my ancestors kept tavern there -- Capt. William Jones and Maj. Ephram Jones [as spelled] owned the farm when I was a child - my great-grandfather and grandfather, then it passed into Uncle Geo. E. Jones hands and he sold it for a good price." |
