I wonder if this Reuben is the same one who is the son of Enoch and grandson of Israel Phillips -- see Israel Phillips entry. I also wonder if this James in my ancestor (his age is right), James Madison Phillips. Or... another possibility: Is Reuben a brother to Jeruel Phillips who may have lived next door (see below)? Click here for more record transcriptions on Jeruel.

A Philip Phillips' family Bible lists the following:
  • Philip Phillips (born Dec. 22, 1762; married March 4, 1789)
  • Elisabeth Phillips (born Aug. 29, 1764)
  • James Phillips (born Jan 11, 1790)
  • Augustus Phillips (born Mar 28, 1791; married February [date and date not entered])
  • Benjamin Phillips (born Sept 29, 1792)
  • Huldah E. Phillips (born Apr 24 [or possible 29], 1795; married November 8, 1815)
  • John Phillips (born Jan 4, 1800; married December [date and year not entered])
  • Jeruel Phillips (born April 5, 1804; married [date not entered])
A copy of the family Bible pages were found in Revolutionary War pension records. Note that Reuben Phillips is not included in this family Bible. I have found speculation that Reuben could be Jeruel's brother. However, other than living close to Jeruel and Jeruel's mother (Elizabeth Phillips) in 1850, I don't have strong evidence making this connection.

Reuben was living with James Philips in 1850 (James was the right age to be my ancestor James Madison Phillips, which is why I have researched this family branch. I haven't been able to make a connection of the Philip Phillips and Jeruel Phillips tree to my family (at least not yet). Census records suggest that Reuben and Elizabeth were Caucasian; Jeruel and his immediate family were a mixed race -- which makes it unlikely that Reuben is a full sibling. However, Reuben could be a half-brother or otherwise related through Jeruel's mother (Elizabeth Phillips; her maiden name and married name were the same - swore to by her cousin Martha Phillips in a Revolutionary War pension record).

Details from Biography of Rev. William Phillips (Westfield, Wisconsin) published in "Portrait and Biographical Album of Green Lake, Marquette and Waushara Counties, Wisconsin" in 1890:

William was an early settler of Marquette County, born in Cayuga County, New York, on May 10, 1827. His parents were August and Asenath (Baker) Phillips, natives of Rhode Island. The family has Scotish roots, and his ancestor 7th generations earlier was in Massachusetts.

William had 5 brothers and 2 sisters (all lived to be adults). This includes: August Phillips (Wrightstown, WI), William Phillips, Stephen C. Phillips (Rhode Island), and Mowry Phillips (who died July 4, 1881). These 4 men were ministers of the Free Will Baptist Church. Daniel (the third son in this family moved to Texas before the war between Mexico and the United States. John C. Phillips (the oldest brother) was born in Rhode Island in 1817. The rest of the sibling were born in New York. Sisters included Nancy Phillips (born Jan. 30, 1830; died June 19, 1819) and Mary Phillips (born July 30, 1831; died Oct. 30, 1855).

William's mother died in Onondaga County, NY, on May 21, 1836. Her husband remarried; he was born in 1795 and died in Michigan on July 27, 1865 (age 70).

In 1844 (when William was 11 years old), he came to Milwaukee, WI. He worked in the timber business in Waukesha County. Then he worked for 3 years in Oshkosh (also in the timber business). In 1853, he lived in Beloit where he engaged in "jobbing" (in timber ???). He met Isabella Watson in Beloit and married her March 15, 1855. Then he moved to Marquette County (jobbing until 1864) and then had a mercantile business in Westfield until April 1872 when his building and goods were destroyed by fire. After that he was in the insurance business and a minister. He was ordained as aminister April 6, 1873.

William and Isabella had 3 children: Frank W. Phillips (born Aug. 12, 1856 and an editor of the Detroit, Michigan, News; Merritt W. Phillips (born Aug. 13, 1858, an architect in New York City, a graduate of Ripon College); and George W. Phillips (born Nov. 9, 1860, lived in Tyndall, South Dakota).

He found "strong drink" as one of the "greatest enemies of mankind." He was a 32-degree Mason and was one of the organizers and the first W.M. of Westfield Lodge, No. 227, A.F. & A.M. He had a 200-acre farm near Westfield.
